Post Surgery Care

Committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care to help you regain mobility, alleviate pain, and achieve optimal function.

A follow up appointment will be scheduled with Dr Michalka 6-8 weeks post surgery.

Before your surgery Dr Michalka will talk to you about any physiotherapy or hand therapy requirements that you may have so that these are in place before your follow up appointment.

Following your surgery, you should:

  • Arrange for someone to take you home.
Keep in mind that after some procedures (especially if a limb is in a plaster or splint) you may not be able to legally or safely drive for a period of time (possibly up to 6-8 weeks)
  • If you have had surgery on a leg, knee, hand or elbow keep it elevated and use ice as directed.
  • Take your pain medication as directed. Begin the pain medication as soon as you start getting uncomfortable, but before you are in severe pain. If you wait to take your medication until the pain is severe, you will have more difficulty controlling the pain.
  • Ask about any Sick/Carer's Certificates and/or Return to Work Certificates that you may require.

If at any time during your recovery you have concerns about your progress, you develop a complication, your referring doctor has concerns about your progress, or the hand therapist managing you has concerns about your progress, please contact Dr Michalka’s rooms directly.
